Gearheads Unite! The Best Car Movies of 2017
Hard-charging cars and slickly produced movies have a relationship that goes back decades, with at least one “car movie” being released by Hollywood just about every year to keep the gearheads salivating on cinema seats.
2017 sees the release of three major movies woven around pedal and metal, as well as a couple of animation flicks with cutesy cars about which the less said the better (in this article, we mean). Here are some of our picks for car movies to watch out for in 2017.
The Fast and Furious franchise, currently into its eighth edition (yes, we know, it is getting a little shop-worn, isn’t it? Oops, did we just say something sacrilegious?) returns without Paul Walker but with all the glittering metal, growling sound effects and stunts on wheels that have thrilled fans for years.
The Fate of the Furious, as it is called, brings the beloved Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, and Ludacris together again, with Diesel even calling Fast 8 “our most ambitious, most entertaining, fastest, and most furious ride yet.”
From a bullet-riddled, jet-powered Dodge Charger for Domenic (Diesel) to a mean machine named Ripsaw, Fast 8 will wreck too much metal to list in its entirety. But we do know that the main vehicles include the community-designed Rally Fighter, the Subaru WRX STi, a Nissan IDx, a Lamborghini Gallardo, various Ferraris and Porsches, a Rolls-Royce and an Aston Martin.
It looks as if every single performance marque has its 15 minutes of fame in Fast 8, but don’t expect a Lykan Hypersport to leap between the Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi in this edition, which is set in New York City with some significant driving action in Cuba and Iceland.
Fast 8 is expected to hit cinemas in April 2017, with Fast 9 and Fast 10 (groan) reportedly planned for future release.
The fifth Transformers movie, The Last Knight, has its usual share of exotics ripping up the tarmac, including the iconic Lamborghini Centenario, of which only 20 coupes and 20 roadsters are scheduled to be produced.
The aggressively designed Centenario – a tribute to the 100th birth anniversary of founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, the tractor maker who founded the cult of the charging bull – is powered by Lambo’s naturally aspirated V-12 engine that delivers 770 bhp. The engine speed limiter has been raised to 8,600 rpm, making it the most powerful engine from Lamborghini so far. Power is sent to all four wheels via an independent shifting rod gearbox. The Centenario can hit the 100 kph sprint in just 2.8 seconds.
The other Transformers included in the movie are Optimus Prime (Western Star 5700), Hot Rod (Lamborghini Centenario), Bumblebee (Chevrolet Camaro), Barricade (Ford Mustang), Drift (Mercedes-AMG GT R), Crosshairs (Corvette C7), and Onslaught (Western Star 4900 SF). There’s also an Aston Martin DB11 and McLaren 570S thrown in there for good measure.
For most gearheads, the vehicular action completely eclipses the human actors, among whom Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Josh Duhamel reprise their characters from earlier editions of Transformers. The movie is scheduled for release around June 2017.
Kung Fu Yoga – Local Content Included!
Not a car movie, really, but who can ignore that thrilling car chase around the streets of Dubai’s Business Bay in this Sino-Indian co-production where supercars share screen space with Jackie Chan, a lion, and racing camels.
A Rolls-Royce, a Lamborghini Aventador, a Bugatti Veyron, a McLaren 570S, and a Maserati are the top-billed stars of Kung Fu Yoga, with another 50 assorted Infiniti, Hummer, and other brands filling in as the supporting cast. But the main reason for a gearhead to watch this movie is the Devel Sixteen, the Dubai-built supercar with a V-16 power plant that delivers 5,000 bhp, taking you from zero to 100 kph in 1.8 seconds. Seriously?
